Paradise on the Water
5 of 5 Stars
Waking up to the mist rising above the smooth water, watching the sun set or gazing up at the stars with a glass of wine on the dock, taking the kids out for a ride on one of the canoes or paddle boards, taking a quick drive into town to eat at one of the many amazing restaurants or just for an ice cream after dinner... this is paradise in Maine. The house was clean, thoughtfully furnished, simply and beautifully decorated and the kitchen outfitted with everything a home cook may need. Although we never met the owners, they were kind enough to send us rainy day suggestions via email when they saw that we were due for some rain. The rain certainly didn't dampen our perfect week. I only hope that we will be able to come back soon for another week at the Grey Lake House.
Outstanding Vacation!

This was truly one of the best vacations we have had and was exactly what we were looking for when deciding on vacationing in Maine! My husband & I stayed in the Lower Camp cottage and two of our 20-something children each with a friend stayed at Upper Camp - it couldn't have worked out better for all of us. Morning coffee watching the lake as the sun came up was a perfectly tranquil way to start the day. By the time the kids woke up it was all about kayaking, paddle boarding or swimming & sunning! The cottages are located on a quiet end of the Lake which was perfect for the water activities.
While we loved being at the lake we also took advantage of hiking in Camden Hills State Park, driving up to Acadia for a big hiking adventure as well as road trips down to Rockport & Rockland. We thoroughly enjoyed the restaurants in Camden for several meals but truly loved eating at the cottage on the screened porch! The Megunticook Market only 2 miles away had everything we needed and we didn't cook once at upper camp - we all loved hanging out together at lower camp!
Chris was an amazing host giving us suggestions for our stay as well as making himself available if we needed anything. The only time we needed something though was when the kids accidentally locked themselves out of Upper Camp:)
As far as we were concerned there was nothing more those cottages needed except to be available when we go back!!!!!
Paradise!

Our family had the most marvelous time on Lake Megunticook in these charming, well-equipped, beautifully decorated and superbly kept cottages! Lake Megunticook is crystal-clear and easy to explore in a kayak or canoe. Our children and grandchildren loved fishing off the dock, skipping stones and, of course, swimming in the pristine water. We enjoyed our ventures in to the nearby, charming town of Camden and surrounding areas, but found it challenging to tear ourselves away from the lake and comforts of the cottages! Our hosts were the best and made every effort to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. And, they succeeded! We highly recommend this lovely property to anyone who may in search of the perfect vacation location.

We had a wonderful time at these two unique homes! The set-up was perfect for our extended family. Everything was very clean and the houses were well-stocked. The lake was gorgeous and we all enjoyed the kayaks and paddle board. The Sailers were extremely pleasant to deal with and made sure our stay in Camden was comfortable and memorable. Camden is a beautiful town and we enjoyed exploring Rockport and Rockland as well. I would go back in a heartbeat!
An Incredible Experience

We had a spectacular vacation here. The two-house set up worked beautifully for us. Our family of four stayed at the lakeside cabin, which is rustic but sturdy and spotless and really charming. And our friends without children stayed at the upper house, which is more modern, with accompanying modern amenities. We were happy to keep the kids away from television and wireless, but were also happy to have access to it when we wanted, by just crossing the road.
The owners have outfitted each house perfectly, so when we wanted to make pizza one night, voila - there was a pizza pan in the cabinet. And unlike most vacation homes we've rented, these are stocked with very good quality kitchen and dish ware. We were already familiar with this part of the Maine coast, but had never stayed so close to Camden. There is plenty to do and see if you're in the mood, but we spent most of our time in the kayaks, jumping off the dock, and throwing a ball into the lake for the dog to swim after. Except, of course, that we went into town almost every night for ice cream. And we had two spectacular dinners out -- one at Long Grain (Thai), and the other in Rockport at my new favorite restaurant, Shepherd's Pie. Oh, and there's a very sweet and pretty little public beach and park about a mile away, which is great for young kids because the entry to the water is very shallow, and the lake bottom has been cleared. It really is just a lovely, well-equipped, relaxing place to spend a vacation!
Our best joint vacation ever!

We recently celebrated Grandma's birthday with a week at this pair of cottages. We vacation once a year with four adults and three cousins, 4-10 years old. We look for a place where the kids can both be with Grandma and have some privacy for naps and earlier bedtimes and where we can bring our dog. These cottages worked perfectly, with Grandma at the lower one with two family members and with four other family members at the upper one with the smaller grandchildren. The bottom cottage is right on the water and offers the rustic elements our family loves and identifies with. The upper cottage offered modern amenities that make it easier to care for small children (microwave, dishwasher, television, internet). We ate lunches and did art projects on the porch at the lower cottage and alternated dinners between the two cottages when we were not off exploring the Lobster Shack up in Lincolnville or the amazing Tai restaurant in Camden or the equally fantastic Mexican restaurant in Rockland. We took the kids on the $5 a child early morning lobster boat tour of Camden Harbor (they steer the boat, saw a seal and osprey nest, pulled up a lobster pot and picked up the lobsters), hiked up to the Cross above Lake Megunticook, visited the statue of Andre the seal in Rockport Harbor, from the book they had read, and drove up Mt. Battie in Camden Hills State Park (though it is also an easy hike), spent a day at the beach at Owl's Head State Park and watched a schooner parade from the breakwater outside Rockland Harbor. But really, all the kids wanted to do was to be at the cottages, jumping off the dock, swimming across to the rock and paddling around in the owner provided kayaks and paddle board. A final element we appreciated was the respectfulness of the residents of the surrounding cottages, no loud music, motorboats that come into the cove drive slowly and almost silently meaning that from the dock and deck we saw loons, geese, ducks and a bald eagle!
The best vacation we've ever had

We rented these wonderful cottages last summer (2013) and I must say it was the best vacation we have ever had. We are a family of 5 with 3 children (3, 6, 8) and my mother came along as well. The two cottages worked perfectly for our needs. My mother stayed in the lower cottage, a wonderful building original to the site that is directly on Lake Megunticook. It almost feels like you are on the water when staying in this cottage as you can see the lake from almost all vantage points. My family and I stayed in the upper cottage, a newer property with two bathrooms and two bedrooms (as well as a daybed in the living room area that worked well for one of our children). I liked the two cottage set up because my mother was able to have some space from us It also felt safer with small children to have a bit of distance between the upper house and the lake itself - it allowed me to sleep at night even with a three year old who can't swim on her own. A bit more about the houses - they were very well appointed with beautiful sheets and towels. Very clean and had all of the dishes, pans etc. that we needed during our stay. Top that off with the very attentive owners and it could not have been better in terms of a rental property. All of the above definitely factor into our desire to rent the cottages again, however the icing on the cake is Lake Megunticook and Camden itself. We chose to go to Camden because we loved the idea of having both an ocean and lake Maine vacation. However, we hardly ever left the house! We could barely pull ourselves away to buy groceries! With such a gorgeous lake, Kayaking and other water activities were so much fun that the days went by with just a few ventures into Camden. We did love the town when we went in and it is really nice to have all the stores (groceries, mini golf, restaurants) that come along with a larger town but for us we were in heaven just relaxing on the dock and enjoying true family time. We will have to force ourselves to explore the Camden area a bit more next time we go back. One thing not to miss though is the drive up to the top of Mt. Battie, it is stunning. If you are looking for a gem of a place to stay in my opinion you have found it in this property. It really was the perfect fit for us and we hope to enjoy it again this coming summer.
